Soviet Council to Get Biro-bidjan Plan for Approval

An ambitious new five-year plan for developing the Jewish autonomous region of Biro-Bidjan will be submitted to the Council of People’s Commissars for approval on June 20, it was announced today.

The plan, bearing the endorsement of the Government commission for Jewish land settlement, provides for increasing the region’s population to 185,000 by 1942 through settlement of some 100,000 immigrants.

The scheme foresees the settlement of 30,000 immigrants on collective farms, absorption of 30,000 in Government-owned industries, 18,000 to be employed as artisans, 9,000 as building workers, 6,000 as transport laborers and 7,000 in various other occupations.

Numerous industrial enterprises are to be completed or launched during the five years ending 1942, including two brick factories with an annual production of 28,000,000 bricks, a factory for manufacture of musical instruments a shoe factory and a brewery.

The plans also envisage the building of a theatre seating 900 persons, a music academy, a museum, two cinemas, fifteen schools and sixteen kindergartens.
