A Soviet court in Smolensk has imposed death sentences on three Soviet citizens found guilty of killing numerous Jews and collaborating with the Nazis during the occupation of the Russian city in the Second World War, it was reported here today from Moscow. Two other defendants were given 15-year prison terms.
Public interest during the trial was so great that the proceedings had to be held in a local theater so that more spectators could be admitted. The name of one of the prosecutors was given as Isaac Schpilberg, obviously a Jew.
