The Copenhagen Jewish Community Board has been ignored by the Soviet Embassy here, after it requested an opportunity for a personal interview with Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev, to discuss the situation of Russian Jewry, it was revealed here today.
The request was made prior to Mr. Khrushchev’s visit to Denmark, but the Soviet Embassy never replied, it was stated by the Board. Since its request had been ignored, the Board today made public the contents of its letter to the USSR Embassy. In that letter, the Board expressed its “anxiety” and “uneasiness” over the Soviet Government’s anti-Jewish discriminations, citing religious and cultural discriminations against Russian Jews; the publication by the Ukrainian Academy of Science of the anti-Semitic book, “Judaism Without Embellishment”; and the closure of many synagogues in the Soviet Union.
The letter also noted that the cultural cooperation agreement signed in 1963 between Denmark and the Soviet Union explicitly bound the two countries to contribute to unhampered development of cultural ties between them.
