Michael Schorr, a director of Soviet motion pictures, was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment and his divorced wife Ida, to five years, for not taking proper care of their son, Misha, now 15 years old.
The verdict is in line with the present policy of the Soviet government to develop greater respect for family life. Both Schorr and his former wife were accused of neglecting the child after their divorce.
Schorr left his wife several years ago and refused to pay for the support of their child. The divorced wife remarried shortly afterwards, and turned the child out of her house. The boy then joined a band of street urchins, wandered about with them for several years and was finally found ill and unconscious on the streets. He was taken to a hospital, where his foot had to be amputated.
