D. J. Nabiev, a member of the Presidium of the Soviet of the town of Derbent, in Daghestan, who issued the order to carry out a search for illegally hoarded kerosene only in the Jewish quarter (reported in the J.T.A. Bulletin of the 15th. inst.), has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, with an additional three years’ deprivation of civil rights. Yefin Borsukov, the Police Chief of Derbent, who conducted the search, has been sentenced to 2½ years’ imprisonment, and the Chief of the Fire Brigade, Henry Garden, has been sentenced to 2½ years’ imprisonment.
A movement has been started in connection with the publicity resulting from the case, to tear down the Magala, or ghetto of the town, in which 500 Jewish families are living. The Magala is a relic of Medieval days.
