A Soviet representative was reported today to have arrived here to negotiate with the Israel Government on the ownership of property in Israel territory formerly held by the “Russian Orthodox Society,” an organization founded in Czarist Russia in 1882.
The properties involved are located in Jerusalem, Haifa, Jaffa, Ain-Karem, Nazareth and Affuleh. Their value is estimated at $8,400,000. There is considerable doubt as to whether the Soviet authorities can legally claim to be the successors of the society.
Ilya Ehrenburg, Soviet writer and propagandist, will soon be appointed Soviet envoy to the republic of Lebanon, according to reports in the Cairo press broadcast over the radio.
