U. S. officials reported today that the Soviet Union has-resumed heavy shipments of arms to Egypt. Arrival of a number of Russian arms in Alexandria was disclosed here. Despite unusual security measures adopted by the Nasser government it was learned that the ships brought tanks, artillery, personnel carriers, and probably military jet planes.
The State Department said that if reports of resumption of Soviet arms shipments to Egypt are true, then the Soviet Union is in violation of the General Assembly resolution calling members to refrain from arms shipments to the Middle East.
When asked if Egypt would also be considered a violator, State Department press spokesman Lincoln White said, “no.” Other American officials, however, indicated that Egypt could conceivably be considered a violator.
The State Department said that it could not confirm or deny reports of Soviet arms shipments to the Middle East at this time. Mr. White said that the Department has noted reports and implied that the U.S. is investigating the matter.
