The Spanish Government turned over to the Sephardic Museum in the ancient El Transito synagogue at Toledo 1,000,000 pesetas (about $16,700) which had been contributed by an anonymous donor who had identified himself as a Jew, it was reported here today.
The donor had sent the money to Foreign Minister Fernando Maria Castiella with a letter thanking Spain for its manifestation of respect for the Jewish religion and culture. The El Transito synagogue dates back to the 14th century, and was dedicated by the Spanish Government some years ago as a national monument. A postage stamp depicting the courtyard of the synagogue was issued by the government this week.
