The desire of Republican Spain to repatriate the descendants of the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 was expressed today by Segundo Blanco Gonzales, Minister of Cultural Affairs, in an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
“We appreciate the enormous contribution of the Jews to the cultural, commercial and economic progress of the country before they were unrightfully expelled,” the Minister declared. The frontiers have been open since the establishment of the Republic, he pointed out, but the expulsion ordered has never been formally recalled. He added that the Government welcomed the cooperation of Sephardic communities throughout the world in effecting the repatriation.
