It was reported from Tetuan today that a Jewish banker, Salvador Ben-Hamu, has been ordered by the rebel authorities of that city to pay a “fine” of 250,000 pesetas (about $90,000) for allegedly having tried to export his capital.
The Havas News Agency reported a campaign against Jews is apparent in the Tangier region. There are signs posted saying: “Buy nothing of Jews, who make prices go up.” Jewish colonies in the rebel zone have been unsympathetic to the insurgents, although they have hesitated to make it apparent, as they fear reprisals, the agency reported.
It was reported at El Arraish that rebels had taxed Jews heavily. Administration of forced doses of castor oil to Jews hostile to the rebel cause also was reported.
