The Knesset will meet in special session tomorrow to discuss the Jackson Amendment which is now before the U.S. Senate, and Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union.
The matter was placed on the agenda at the request of Likud, the new non-Labor alignment. The Israeli government has taken no official position on the Jackson Amendment on grounds that it is an internal matter of the U.S. But the Knesset may make some move in favor of the measure although the Labor Alignment has supported the government policy of non-interference.
Gahal, the largest faction in the Likud coalition, has been active in demanding that Israel indicate to the U.S. that it favors adoption of the Jackson Amendment. Gahal leader Menachem Beigin has repeatedly accused the government of not doing enough for Soviet Jews. The Knesset turned down his demand for support of the Jackson Amendment before it adjourned for summer recess.
