Ambassador Yosef Tekoah of Israel told the General Assembly this afternoon that his delegation was “not pressing” Israel’s earlier request for a separate vote on the admission of the two Germanys to the United Nations. “The Israeli delegation regrets that due to objections of the sponsor of the draft resolution, a separate vote on the admission of the German Democratic Republic has become impossible,” he said.
Tekoah was referring to a resolution worked out here whereby the Democratic Republic of East Germany and the West German Federal Republic would be admitted simultaneously by acclamation. The admission of both Germanys in that manner occurred late this evening.
The Israeli diplomat said that Israel had asked for a separate vote for the opportunity to record its opposition to the East German regime. He said that Israel supports the admission of West Germany and would have voted accordingly had a direct vote been held.
Tekoah said that for “more than 20 years the German Democratic Republic has been trying to relegate to oblivion the holocaust wrought upon the Jewish people by Nazi Germany and has been fanning the flames of hostility against Israel.”
