The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian people approved today the wording of a draft resolution on Palestinian rights, opening the way for a United States veto in the Security Council Thursday.
The resolution, which was approved by the committee in a closed session, declared that the “Palestinian people should be able to exercise its inalienable rights of self-determination, national independence and sovereignty in Palestine.” (See Aug. 21 Bulletin for full draft.)
According to sources here, the U.S. is certain to veto this resolution. The Palestine Liberation Organization and its supporters are planning to call for an emergency special session of the General Assembly next week if the U.S. vetoes the resolution. Meanwhile, there were reports here today that the U.S. is continuing in its effort to postpone the Security Council meeting in order to reach a compromise.
