The British Government will immediately review the cases of all Germans and Austrians residing in England, Home Secretary Sir John Anderson declared today, announcing in Commons the measures to be taken regarding aliens.
A large proportion of the Germans now in England are refugees, and there is a general desire to avoid treating as enemies those who are friendly to the country which offered them asylum, the new Home Secretary stated.
The Home Office announced yesterday that the Aliens Law has been amended by an order-in-council requiring all enemy aliens over 16 years of age to report immediately to the police. The order forbids Germans and Austrians to change their residence without prior approval of the police, to travel more than five miles from their residence without permit or to be absent from their residence for more than 24 hours without reporting to the nearest police station. It includes German and Austrian refugees, while refugees from former Czecho-Slovakia are apparently affected only by the general regulations for aliens.
