A speech from the throne by King Hassan II, in which he again stressed the importance he attached to Islamic values in the “new Morocco” evoked varying comment today from Moroccan Jewish communities.
The King again emphasized the high value he placed on religious works in this Moslem country and the eminent place occupied by religious studies in Morocco’s scholastic curriculum. It was recalled that some time ago the King received a delegation of Jewish leaders who presented greetings to him on behalf of the Jewish communities.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice announced here that it has transferred Rabbinical Judge Simon Dayan from Marrakech to Casablanca. The Ministry explained that the transfer was due to the fact that Marrakech, which has a Jewish population of only 3,250, now has four rabbis, whereas this city, containing the bulk of Morocco’s Jewish population, has between 40,000 and 50,000 Jews, served by four rabbis.
