Members of Congress, marking the second anniversary of Israel’s independence, today urged the State Department to end the Near East arms race, which they described as a threat to the peace of the entire world. In the House some 20 Congressmen spoke during a one-hour point of special business.
Aside from messages of greeting to Israel, the Congressmen noted that the Near Eastern crisis has resulted from British arms shipments to the Arab states. They urged Secretary of State Dean Acheson to use American influence to bring about just peace treaties between Israel and the Arab states.

Herter, and Louis B. Heller. The Senators included: Herbert H. Lehman, Irving M. Ives; Wayne Morse; Scott W. Lucas; Estes Kefauver; Leverett Saltonstall; Henry C. Lodge, Jr., Matthew M. Neely.
