The Jewish Community Relations Council of St. Louis has issued a statement supporting the enforcement of law and order but urging that “it never be used in a repressive manner.” The statement arose from a tense situation that developed in this city after the alleged beating of two Negro militants which led to punitive measures taken against several St. Louis police officers.
The statement, by the JCRC’s executive committee, said in part that “the Board of Police Commissioners can perform its duty and at the same time assist police officers in the performance of their duties by making it perfectly clear that the law will not be used to stifle expression of opinion or for the purpose of harassment, or be used repressively or selectively.”
