The recommendation of Dr. Henry J. Gerling, superintendent of schools in St. Louis, that Hebrew be introduced as an accredited language in the high schools of the city was approved today at a regular meeting of the Board of Education. Dr. Gerlin said that the new course would be introduced in recognition of its historical and cultural significance and will lead to credits on a par with Latin and the modern languages.
Dr. David Reiss, superintendent of the Associate Hebrew Schools and head of the Hebrew department at Washington University, was appointed by the Board of Education as head of the new city Hebrew department and instructed to work out a curriculum for the high schools. Two years ago Dr. Reiss was instrumental in having a Hebrew department established at Washington University. In his campaign to get Hebrew into the St. Louis high schools Dr. Reiss was assisted by Emil Mayer, a local attorney who is a former president of the B’nai B’rith district grand lodge No. 2.
