Stanford and Haifa universities are together seeking an alternative fuel to oil.
Haifa University announced Thursday that researchers at its new School fo Marine Studies, together with counterparts at Stanford, are trying to develop means of tapping a gas available in large quantities under the sea floor.
The research was made possible by an $8 million donation from American benefactor Leon Charney to the Israeli university.
“Our research will focus on producing alternative energy from water instead of oil – a revolution in the field. We are pleased that Stanford University is cooperating with us in this important research,” Charney said in a statement, adding that this source of energy exists all over the planet and its production will eliminate the dependence on oil that is concentrated in a number of Middle Eastern countries.
