The United States Department of State was informed by cable from the American Ambassador at Angora that the Turkish National Assembly has voted to separate church and state.

In passing the bill, introduced by Ismet Pasha, the constitution of the Turkish Republic was amended to omit all references to religion. The article in the constitution proclaiming Islam as the religion of Turkey was stricken out. Deputies of parliament will take their oath “on honor” instead of the original formula of “before God”.
