Reconsideration of charges that the Arabian American Oil Company is discriminating against Jewish applicants for jobs in violation of the State FEPC was recommended yesterday by Charles Abrams, retiring head of the State Commission Against Discrimination. The recommendation returns the complaint, filed by the American Jewish Congress to the Commission member who dismissed the AJC action originally, Elmer A. Carter.
ARAMCO has never denied that it screens out Jews for jobs at its Saudi Arabian installations, pointing out that Saudi Arabia refuses to allow Jews –American or otherwise–into the country. Mr. Carter, who will himself succeed Mr. Abrams, after consultations with the State Department held that considerations of national security outweighed violation of the state law, Mr, Carter also noted, with supporting statements from the State Department, that there was no effective way ARAMCO could employ Jews in Saudi Arabia in view of the Arabian Government’s ban.
