The State Department announced during the weekend that following a special inspection it has decided to release tomorrow two surplus U.S. Navy frigates sold to an Egyptian company, which have been held under embargo at Baltimore since last Wednesday following reports that the vessels had not been demilitarized.
The announcement said that representatives of the Department, Coast Guard and customs authorities inspected the two vessels and found that “they were demilitarized according to Navy specifications, which the State Department concurred in.” The inspectors “found there were no gun turrets, as indicated in a press report,” the announcoment said, adding that “there were some rusty ammunition bins which were part of the deck.”
