The State Department denied today that former U. S. Ambassador to Egypt Henry Byroade had made any attempt to “sabotage” U. S. policy in the Middle East.

Mr. Byroade had been accused of advising Egyptian President Nasser to discount a strong note carried to Cairo last fall by George V. Allen, then Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Mr. Allen’s mission to Egypt followed the announcement of the Egyptian-Communist arms deal.

The State Department said today that it is satisfied that neither Mr. Byroade nor any other American official made any effort to sabotage the Allen mission to Cairo last October.

An article in “The Reporter” magazine asserted that Nasser had specifically named the American Ambassador as the man who told him to ignore the Allen note.
