Official United States intercession on behalf of Jews and others arrested in Iraq might do more harm than good in view of existing American – Iraqi relations, State Department officials said today.
The officials said that those arrested in Iraq in the last few days were obviously in peril of arbitrary death sentences but there was nothing the United States could accomplish by direct representations to Baghdad.
It was suggested that other nations possessing better links with the Arabs might more effectively involve themselves if such countries felt so disposed.
