A State Department spokesman announced officially today that “the Department has some information indicating that the Soviet bloc may be making an approach to an offer of arms for Israel.”
Asked if a Soviet offer to Israel has already been made, Henry Suydam, the Department’s chief press spokesman, refused to amplify his brief statement. However, it was learned that Israel received a hint that it might be able to buy Red arms if it applies for them but that Israel does not want to do so, preferring Western sources of supply if they can be obtained.
In response to a request for the State Department’s views on reports of danger of a renewed Arab-Israel war, Mr. Suydam said the concern of the United States was expressed in a joint Anglo-American statement issued in New York by Secretary of State Dulles and British Foreign Secretary MacMillan during the conference of foreign ministers.
