Secretary of State Cordell Hull today expressed a desire to take up in a “strong and condemnatory manner” the large-scale deportations of Jews from unoccupied France. He added, however, that he would like to get as full a statement of facts as possible before doing so.
Asked about requests from Jewish organizations that he use his good offices with the Vichy Government to prevent the handing over of more victims to Hitler, Hull replied that such requests are always welcome “but scarcely necessary in cases of wholesale inhuman treatment such as this is reported to be.”
