The United States will “participate constructively” in United Nations Trusteeship Council efforts to achieve implementation of the internationalization of Jerusalem, Michael J. McDermott, State Department spokesman, announced today, in amplification of a prepared State Department statement made public this afternoon. The statement reads:
“The United Nations Trusteeship Council is to meet in Geneva on January 19 to consider the Jerusalem question within the framework of the instructions to the Council contained in the December 9th resolution of the General Assembly.
“Although it opposed the General Assembly resolution, the United States, consistent with its policy of respect for decisions taken in the United Nations by a majority of members, abides by the decision and is prepared as a member of the Trusteeship Council to participate constructively when the Council undertakes the task concerning Jerusalem given it by the Assembly.”
