The State Department is hopeful that the current conversations between Secretary Byrnes and Foreign Minister Bevin will result in a solution which will halt the deportation of Jewish immigrants to Cyprus, it was stated by Loy Henderson, chief of the Office of Near Eastern and African Affairs.
In a letter to the Agudas Israel World Organization, made public today, Mr. Henderson said that “it is hoped that these conversations will prove helpful in arriving at a solution which will prevent the recurrence of incidents similar to those which have taken place at Haifa.”
The letter was in reply to a telegram sent Mr. Byrnes by Jacob Rosenheim, president of the Agudas Israel, who had appealed for American intervention to prevent further deportations.
