Assistant Secretary of State William B. Macomber Jr., said today that the State Dept. opposes Congressional moves to ban Egyptian cotton here because “such legislation would hamper efforts aimed toward reaching a settlement of the Arab-Israeli problem.” He wrote Rep. J. Herbert Burke Fla. Rep., that “we believe we can best serve the cause of peace in the area by standing ready to cooperate with all parties in constructive and even-handed political initiatives, meanwhile permitting normal commercial contacts to continue.”
