The State Department indicated Friday that it hoped Israel would not retaliate for the explosion that destroyed its military headquarters in Tyre, killing and wounding many Israeli soldiers.
Department spokesman John Hughes noted that Israel has named a board of inquiry which means that the Israelis do not know who was responsible for the blast. He did not specifically ask that there not be an Israeli retaliation.
Hughes said the United States “greatly regrets the loss of life” in the blast and extends its “condolences” to the families of the victims.
