Asked if the instructions to the U.S. delegation in Paris to vote for a possible application of sanctions against Israel had been cleared with the President, Michael J. McDermott, State Department press spokesman, replied: “It was cleared in Washington. That’s as far as I will go. I won’t go to the White House with you.”
McDermott admitted, however, that the instructions had been cleared with Under-Secretary of State Robert A. Lovett. He also said he was “afraid” he “couldn’t comment” on whether or not the instructions had been cleared with the President.
