The State Department today summoned Israel and Jordan diplomatic representatives in Washington and expressed to them the concern of the American Government over Israel-Jordanian frontier incidents.
Israel Minister David Goitein was called to the office of John Jernigan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Mr. Goitein pointed out that the number of Israelis murdered, cattle stolen, and quantity of irrigation pipe destroyed had reached alarming proportions in 1952. He said there was evidence that this was not done by isolated infiltrees but rather on official orders.
The Israel diplomat told the State Department that, while he had no information about the alleged Israel actions the reports were not surprising in view of the record of Jordanian actions. Mr. Jernigan also made known that a similar statement was made to Dr. Yusuf Haikal, Minister of Jordan.
From London it was reported today that the British Government, responding to a plea from the Jordan Government, has asked Israel to take all possible steps “to restore tranquility and prevent incidents” in the border areas.
