The State of Pennsylvania plans to establish a Chair of Preventative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh in honor of Dr. Jonas Salk, discoverer of the successful anti-polio vaccine, Gov. George M. Leader announced this week-end. The Governor revealed that on May 10 at a ceremony at which the bill establishing the chair would be signed, he would also award Pennsylvania’s Medal of Meritorious Service, the state’s highest honor, to Dr. Salk.

The chair, which will be set up in the University’s Medical School, will be supported with an annual contribution of $25,000 from the state to pay the salaries of Dr. Salk, a secretary and some incidental expenses. Dr. Salk, the Governor said, will be the first holder of the chair and “we hope he will be there for a long time.” Dr. Salk developed the vaccine at the University of Pittsburgh, with which he has been associated since 1947.
