The future status of the 150,000 Algerian Jews is to be discussed at the forthcoming Franco-Algerian negotiations, scheduled to open next Saturday at Evian, it was indicated here today.
According to the plans, the agenda of the conference calls first for a decision about a cease-fire between the Moslem rebels and the French forces in Algeria; then for a discussion about substantial guarantees for the 1,000,000 Frenchmen in Algeria; finally, the two sides will come to the question of the Algerian Jews.
The French delegation will insist that the Jewish community in Algeria be considered an integral part of the European community there. There are increasing beliefs here that the Algerian delegation, representing the Moslem rebels, will join the French in this view.
Although the Algerian delegation will be led by the rebels’ provisional Vice-Premier, Krim Bel Kacem, who represents Moslem extremists, it is known that the sessions on guarantees to Jews and other Europeans in Algeria will probably be dealt with by Dr. Ahmoud Francis, the provisional Minister of Economy, who is known for his liberal views and for a relatively comprehensive attitude toward this issue.
The French delegation will be led by Louis Joxe, who met recently with Dr. Nahum Goldmann for a discussion of the future fate of the Algerian Jews. Included in the French delegation will also be M. Tricot, President Charles de Gaulle’s advisor on Algerian affairs. The latter has been in touch with a number of Jewish organizations which were assured recently about the French Government’s determination regarding guarantees for the Algerian Jews.
