The convention of the United Steelworkers of America, attended by 3,000 delegates representing 1,250, 000 members, adopted a resolution urging the United States Government not to send any arms to the Arab countries. The resolution, which was voted following an address by Yaacov Shimoni, Counsellor of the Israel Embassy, reads:
“The United Steelworkers of America deplore the careless distribution of arms to Arab states which have announced their intentions to destroy Israel. We fear that these arms will induce them to attempt to fulfill their threats. Arms can be granted to these countries only after peace is achieved in the Middle East. To upset the delicate balance of power by the incautious grants of weapons is to invite a flare-up and divert the attention of the countries involved from the Communist threat to local disputes. America must not encourage local wars by arming belligerents.
“The United Steelworkers of America urge the Administration to make as many friends as possible among the nations whose friendship is necessary for the defense of the free world against Communism, but warn against the folly of alienating existing trustworthy friends in order to make new and unreliable ones and of weakening trusted allies by strengthening countries of doubtful friendship.”
