Two thousand persons from all walks of life and representing all faiths joined today in memorializing Dr. Stephen Wise, one of America’s greatest religious and communal leaders, in ceremonies dedicating the headquarters of the American and World Jewish Congresses, bearing his name.
The ceremonies, which took place just four days before the anniversary of his death two years ago at the age of 75, was attended both at the Park Avenue Synagogue and the Congress House by more than 2,000 persons who revered Dr. Wise both as a Jew and an American. Messages were received from President Truman, from notables here and abroad and from scores of Jewish communities overseas.
Speakers at the dedication exercises in the Park Avenue Synagogue included Mayor Vincent Impellitterd; the Marchioness of Reading, president of the British Section of the World Jewish Congress; Dr. Israel Goldstein, chairman of the Western Hemisphere Executive of the W.J.C. and Dr. Arieh Tartakower, chairman of the Israeli Executive of the W.J.C. Rabbi Irving Miller, president of the World Jewish Congress, presided over the ceremonies.
