The National Conference on Soviet Jewry reported it has learned that the appeal by Dr. Mikhail Stern from his eight-year prison term will be heard tomorrow in the Kiev district court. Stanley Lowell, NCSJ chairman, said the appeal hearing will be an opportunity for Soviet officials to demonstrate to the world whether they are willing to change their harassment of Jews or whether a new anti-Jewish campaign is mounting, as news reports from Moscow would indicate.
Dr. Stern’s son, August, who recently emigrated from the Soviet Union, will arrive here soon under NCSJ auspices to help spearhead support for his father. The NCSJ said August, who is now in Israel, will meet with key officials of organizations which have supported the struggle of Soviet Jewry, and particularly that of Dr. Stern, with the cooperation of the Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry. He will meet with similar officials in Washington and Boston.
