Strict security measures were introduced at this port today where three passenger liners arrived landing a total of 1000 passengers and immigrants. Meticulous searches were made of the luggage of all the arrivals, including their hand luggage. Nothing of a dangerous nature was found.
One of the arriving vessels was the Greek Sonion with 210 pilgrims from the US and Puerto Rico on a Holy Land tour organized by Wholesale Tours, the travel agency that arranged the tours of the Puerto Rican victims of last week’s massacre at Lydda Airport. Special attention was paid the Greek ship as her last port of call was Beirut. Lebanon.
The Italian motorship Enotria landed 250 passengers and the Israeli car-ferry. Nili landed 500, mainly immigrants. At the port of Ashdod, where only cargo ships call, armed guards have taken over the functions of unarmed customs officials.
