Most of this city’s restaurants and cafes were closed today as the result of a lockout in reply to a strike of employes which has been going on in a number of the largest eating establishments here.
The strikers are demanding an increase in wages and better working conditions. They protested against the intolerable long hours and working on the Sabbath and Jewish holidays.
The strike, coming at the height of the tourist season, is making heavy inroads on Tel Aviv’s income. The municipality intervened today and demanded that a truce between the employers and employes be called for a few weeks in order to avoid the disturbances during the season.
In a statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Acting Mayor Rokeach expressed the hope that a peaceful settlement will be reached shortly as a result of the intervention by the municipality.
