The lengthy strike of 1, 700 workers at the ATA textile company reached a total deadlock today when a Histadrut leader rejected a management demand for the right to dismiss workers on efficiency grounds regardless of seniority.
The rejection by Pinchas Lavon, Histadrut secretary general, was communicated to Hans Moller, chairman of the ATA board of directors. Mr. Lavon’s stand was taken on instructions of a special Mapai committee established to determine the party’s position on the strike, now more than six weeks old.
Suspension of ATA production was reported to have resulted in considerable hardship not only for the ATA workers but also for a number of small suppliers to the ATA factory.
