A nationwide strike of government and institution-employed physicians was averted by an agreement between the Israel Government and the Israel Medical Association. The government granted a number of the doctors’ demands and agreed to negotiate upon the others.

The negotiations carry a two-week deadline, after which the doctors may declare an immediate strike if they are not satisfied with the results of the bargaining. All medical centers, clinics and hospitals were functioning normally today.

Meanwhile, other government-employed professionals, including engineers, agronomists, and architects, remained on strike to force higher salaries. Other government-employed professionals, including statisticians, economists and municipal engineers are expected to join the strike shortly. The engineers demand salaries equal to that of the physicians. The latter, however, have stated that if the other professionals are brought to a par with them, they will ask for a differential to again bring them above the others.
