The strike of some 100 postal porters, now in its third day, was causing chaos today in Israeli commercial life with the suspension of all mail with the exception of special delivery letters, which are not handled by the porters.
All efforts to end the strike have failed in spite of warnings by the Histadrut, Israel’s labor federation, that it would not take up the matter unless the strikers returned to work. Government officials have urged that drastic steps be taken to prevent the continued interruption of vital services because of a small group of workers.
