Students at Columbia University in New York are building a giant menorah out of cans collected for a holiday food drive. The 10-foot-high menorah is being made from more than 1,000 cans collected by a variety of student groups.
Ami Ayalon, an Israeli security chief turned grass-roots peacemaker, joined the Labor Party. Ayalon signed on with the main opposition party Monday but said he had no intention of challenging Shimon Peres for the leadership. “I intend to continue serving the country, and pushing for Labor to back Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s disengagement plan,” Ayalon, a retired Israeli navy admiral and former Shin Bet chief, told JTA.
