Government circles here expressed optimism today that efforts to extradite former Gestapo chief Klaus Barbie, alias Klaus Altmann, from Bolivia will be successful. Barbie, known as the “Gestapo butcher of Lyons” in World War II, faces trial for the murder of a French resistance leader and the deportation of French Jews.
According to sources here, certain members of the Bolivian Supreme Court may reject a Bolivian government compromise proposal to have Barbie tried in Bolivia rather than France. The court is scheduled to take up the case next month. Barbie was traced to Bolivia last Feb. by Mrs. Beate Klarsfeld, a German woman seeking to bring Nazi war criminals to Justice. He had been reported living in Bolivia under the name of Altmann but documents provided by West German authorities confirmed his identity as Barbie.
