The British Government believes that the Anglo-Egyptian agreement on the Suez Canal, which was scheduled to be signed today in Cairo, will lead to a general relaxation of tension in the Middle East which will have a favorable effect on Israel’s position, Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden told Parliament today.
Mr. Eden made this statement in reply to Clement Davies, leader of the Liberal Party, who questioned him after the Foreign Secretary had reported to the House on the pact and what he hoped it would do for Anglo-Egyptian relations and for the situation in the Middle East.
Mr. Davies asked “whether in these new circumstances the position of Israel had been considered and borne in mind, and will be borne in mind?” Mr. Eden replied, “Yes sir. Our hope is that as a result of these negotiations we shall be able to move on to a general relaxation of tension throughout the Middle East.”
