A delegation of leading Moroccan rabbis, headed by Grand Rabbi Saul Danan, was received today by Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Youssef who will return to the capital of Morocco within the next ten days. The Sultan also received Jacques Dahan, secretary general of the Council of Jewish Communities in Morocco, and Bernard Lecache, president of the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism.
The Sultan assured the Jewish representatives that no distinction would be made between Moslem and Jewish subjects under his rule. He asked them to urge the Jews to make their contribution to the building of a new Morocco. The Jews in Morocco have no citizenship status but are considered “proteges” of the Sultan.
The Rabbinical delegation said in a communique that the rabbis “presented to His Majesty respectful greetings of the Jewish population of Morocco and conveyed their fervent prayers that the nation should enjoy in the immediate future a new era of prosperity to be found once again in peace and harmony of all his peoples.”
