The Supreme Court of New York County will soon be called upon to render its opinion as to whether an individual has any property rights in a public institution which he helped to organize
The case, brought to court by Dr. Samuel Buchler, New York attorney of 38 Park Row and formerly president of the Federation of Hungarian Jews, is of the Jewish Court of Arbitration, Inc. against another Jewish Court of Arbitration at 225 Broadway, New York City. In a petition filed by Dr. Buchler, the plaintiff asks the court to issue an injunction restraining the Jewish Court of Arbitration of 225 Broadway, from receiving and hearing cases of a’ Jewish nature brought by individuals for settlement without litigation.
The Jewish Court of Arbitration was organized in 1920 at a meeting of the United Orthodox Synagogues. Dr. Samuel Buchler was elected honorary secretary of the court. He, in turn, appointed Louis Richman, at that time his law partner, as Executive secretary of the court. When the two dissolved their partnership, the Jewish Court of Arbitration was continued by Mr. Richman at 225 Broadway. Former Judge Jacob Panken is chairman of the court. Dr. Buchler then incorporated the Jewish Court of Arbitration under the name of Jewish Court of Arbitration, Inc.
The Jewish Court of Arbitration in its complaint on file in the supreme court, claims the exclusive right to conduct arbitration activities under that name and asks the injunction. The trial was set for October.
