The Bulgarian Cabinet has approved amendments to the Rehabilitation Law of March, 1945, under which Jews who lost property during the fascist regime will be the principal beneficiaries.
The main provisions of the revised law provide for voiding compulsory sales of Jewish property, the proceeds of which were used to pay a special “Jewish tax” levied by the former government. The property will be returned to the former owners.
In cases where the tax was paid in cash, the state will recompense individual Jews in cash up to 50,000 levas and the balance in negotiable bonds bearing three percent interest.
Liquidated Jewish cooperatives will be re-established. For this purpose, the government will make a ten-year 250,000,000 leva loan, interest free to the Jewish Cooperative Bank to assist artisans and merchants whose businesses or shops were expropriated.
