The Swiss Government has issued a new decree improving the status of the 13,000 refugees still in the country.
Under the new regulation refugees who desire to establish permanent or semi-permanent residence in Switzerland will be permitted to remain if government officials decide that it is inadrisable for the refugees to return to their countries of origin. Applicants for permanent or semi-permanent residence must be less than 59 years of age, Children under 16 must be living with a Swiss family or be related to Swiss citizens.
Exceptions will be made for artists, intellectuals and skilled workman. Refugees will also be permitted to accept employment, which they were previously forbidden to do.
