Evidence indicating the sympathy which Palestinian Jews in the time of Diocletian expressed for the Christian martyrs when the Roman Emperor was persecuting was presented here today by Prof. Saul Lieberman in his paper “Diocletian’s Persecution of the Christians in the Light of the Talmud,” read before The third Institute for Biblical and Post-Biblical Studies, at the Jewish Theological Seminary here. Dr, Lieberman’s lecture, developed around hitherto unrecognized text pertaining to this period of persecution.
Outstanding scholars and authorities on Jewish learning are taking part in the program of the Institute, which opened today under the auspices of the Jewish Theological Seminary. The participants, members of the faculty and visiting scholars will cover a wide field of Jewish scholarship from biblical times through the medieval period. The Institute will close on March 30.
